Tasfia Jahangir

Research Associate

Tasfia Jahangir is in her final year of undergraduate study at the University of Southern California (USC), where she is studying Psychology, Public Health and Spanish. She founded the USC Chapter of the MINDS Foundation, and also served as a Research Fellow for MINDS in Summer 2019, studying the perceptions and idioms of distress of postpartum depression among low-income mothers and families in Mumbai, India. Her research interests lie in the community- and systems-level facilitators of mental health among marginalized populations, particularly racial/ethnic minority groups and criminal justice populations. Specifically, she is interested in studying how the cultural and contextual aspects of living in intergenerational poverty (and its correlates, such as substance use and violence exposure) can affect psychological well-being. She hopes to pursue a career in which she can bridge research and practice, by developing and delivering culturally-sensitive community-based mental health interventions. Currently, she is pursuing research under Dr. Stanley Huey in USC’s Department of Psychology, and Dr. Mellissa Withers in the USC Institute of Inequalities in Global Health.
