Everyone is struggling in their own way and we may be physically distant from each other, but we certainly are not struggling alone. Addiction is a chronic disease. It can be prevented, and it can be treated. It is critical that we do not forget about the nation’s addiction crisis in our response to COVID-19, and instead recognize that everyone is struggling in their own way though we may be physically distant from each other. We must be vigilant to the struggles of those around us—mental, physical, emotional, and economic.
The impacts of the pandemic will likely increase childhood trauma, which increases addiction risk. Across the world children and adults are dealing with an unprecedented change in routine—-that’s dangerous. Economic depression and unemployment are a bad combination for those already dealing with addiction. The current pandemic is straining the healthcare system making resources even more difficult to access.
Even before the pandemic we knew that many changes were needed to combat addiction. We need to build a comprehensive approach that will prevent the spread of addiction and ensure access to treatment for all those in need.
The MINDS Foundation is truly honoured to have a special panel to discuss this issue. Not only will we gain insight from these folks who are on the front-lines of addiction, but we will come together as a group to learn how we can help our loved ones and neighbors. Will you join us to learn how you can make a difference when it comes to addiction?
